Dawes (William) is born in the North End.
April 6, 1745
Born at 22 North Street (16), William Dawes, along with Paul Revere, becomes one of 40 riders dispatched to spread the news of the British troops march on Lexington and Concord on April 18, 1775. Unlike Revere, he takes the longer route across Boston Neck, rides through today’s John Eliot Square, and like Revere successfully warns Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Lincoln, but never reaches Lexington and Concord. Dawes dies in Boston on February 25, 1799, and is buried in King’s Chapel Burying Ground.
